To stop strangers from adding you to random Telegram groups or channels, you must change your invitation permissions to “My Contacts” or “Nobody”. By default, Telegram allows anyone with your username or phone number to add you.
Steps to Restrict Invitations
The exact menu name may vary slightly between devices (e.g., “Invites” or “Groups & Channels”), but the path is the same:
-
Open Settings:
-
Android: Tap the three lines (☰) in the top-left → Settings.
-
iOS: Tap the Settings gear icon in the bottom-right.
-
Privacy and Security: Tap on Privacy and Security.
-
Groups & Channels (or Invites): Under the “Privacy” section, tap on Groups & Channels (on some versions, this is simply labeled Invites).
-
Set “Who Can Add Me”:
-
My Contacts: Only people saved in your phone’s address book can add you to a group.
-
Nobody (if available): This prevents everyone from adding you directly; they must send you an invitation link instead.
-
Add Exceptions (Optional): If you choose “My Contacts,” you can still use the “Never Allow” tool to block specific contacts from ever adding you to a group.
Additional Privacy Tips
-
Username Search: Spammers often find users through global search. If you don’t need a public username, deleting your username in your profile settings makes it harder for strangers to find you.
-
Report as Spam: If you are already in a spam group, tap the group name, select the three dots, and choose Reportthen Spam before leaving. This helps Telegram’s automated systems block those accounts.
-
Check Active Sessions: If you are still being added despite these settings, check Settings > Privacy and Security > Active Sessions to ensure no unauthorized devices have access to your account.
